Kristin Kay spent years piping frosting inside a corporate cupcake franchise before deciding to bake on her own terms. Going independent in 2019 gave her room to source her own ingredients, adjust the menu on customer feedback, and build the flavor list as a team effort, where nearly everyone on staff has a house cupcake they call their own. The lineup leans adventurous. Traditional standbys like Signature Vanilla and Strawberry Crush share the case with quirkier creations such as Banana Pudding Pie and seasonal picks like Pumpkin Maple Praline. Cupcakes are the headline, but the menu reaches further into cookie sandwiches, parfaits, cutting cakes, and custom orders for weddings and celebrations. What sets it apart is who it feeds. Vegan and gluten-free options are baked daily, with keto and sugar-free handled on request, and the gluten-free cupcakes get their own display case rather than a leftover shelf. Kay also points her ovens at the community, baking for Upstate fundraisers well beyond the shop. Regulars give it real credit for cupcakes that stay moist, for a small, art-filled space that feels more boutique than bakery, and for wedding work priced without the usual markup. The menu keeps shifting, so finding the one that becomes your regular is something you sort out a few visits in.

Carmella's brought its Italian-inspired café to the West End in early 2024, taking a spot in Camperdown right on the falls of the Reedy. Owner Brian Solari opened the first Carmella's in Charleston in 2014 and named it for his family, then carried the bright, open, greenery-filled feel he and his wife loved in Rome and Florence up to Greenville's Main Street. What sets it apart is how much of the day it covers. Doors open at eight for coffee, breakfast sandwiches, and granola bowls, and the place runs to midnight every day as a dessert and cocktail bar, one of the few spots on Main you can hit for a morning latte or a late dessert after a show at the Peace Center. The house coffee is roasted nearby by Foresight, and the case up front holds made-in-house gelato and sorbet alongside macarons, tarts, twice-baked Italian cookies, and small cakes. That case is the real draw, and it never sits still. The dessert lineup rotates with the seasons, so what's under the glass changes from one visit to the next, and gluten-free options like GF bagels and tarts are marked for anyone watching allergens. Specialty cakes are made to order with a few days' notice. Two things bring people back: a display regulars call almost too pretty to eat, and the riverside patio that turns a quick coffee into a reason to linger. The seasonal specials, and the family recipes behind them, are best found in person, with a table by the water and an hour to spare.

Some of us will never get to a pasticceria in Genoa or a caffe in Sicily, and this family opened up so we wouldn't have to. Dolce Italy is run by bakers whose roots run back to Genoa and Sicily, from a line of pastry chefs, and it shows in work made entirely from scratch with ingredients carried over from Italy alongside local ones. The lineup runs sweet to savory: cannoli, cassata, and gelato, cookies like amaretti, anise, sesame, and cuccidati fig cookies, plus crusty Italian breads, focaccia, and savory Sicilian cooking. Order an espresso over a scoop of gelato and you have an affogato done right. Two dozen or more pastries come out fresh daily, so the case is rarely the same twice. The road here covered some ground, from baking for restaurant kitchens around Los Angeles to a first shop in Rochester, New York, before opening here in 2022. Regulars, homesick Italians among them, keep saying one bite puts them right back home. Which pastry becomes your regular is something you settle one visit at a time.
